Welcome graphic

Pull up a chair, sit and make the best friends you've ever had, all through the internet! Welcome to iVillage.com Home & Garden Channel, and The Stitcher's Niche message board.

Introductions:

Hi, We're Carol (cl-thatyank) and Becky (cl-nottoo), the Community Leaders (cls) for The Stitcher's Niche at Home & Garden. Because you recently posted on our board, we wanted to welcome you, and give you some tips and info to make your experience with us as enjoyable as possible.

What is a Community Leader?

Community leaders are volunteer members of the iVillage community who are here to welcome newcomers, answer questions, keep conversations going, answer email from staff and community --- everything we can to make the board a warm and welcoming community. But this board is YOUR community and we encourage you to participate fully in any and all ways with which you are comfortable.

Home & Garden Channel

We like to call Home & Garden the "Zen" channel because it is one area of iVillage where you can escape from kids, family problems, or relationship woes. On Home & Garden you can delve into our many craft projects, find out about feng shui, discover great organizing tips, find out the best cleaning products, learn about gardening and get tons of bargain decorating ideas.

You can also learn all you need to know about the care and feeding of your pets, from anacondas (on Amphibians and Reptiles) to Zebras (Wildlife Watching?). You can learn to manage your money!  Finally, if you work from home, you can learn to build your business and how to balance home life with your work.

But most importantly, and the reason you are here, is to meet friends who share your interests, concerns and dreams involving the home. Besides being a center of solutions for homeowners, home renters, apartment dwellers, gardeners or houseplant lovers -- we are a channel that encourages you to find happiness in your environment.

At the top of our message board, you will find a number of links to various Home & Garden features, quizzes, topics and member websites. Please feel free to explore these links at your leisure.

We are delighted that you've decided to participate in the Home & Garden channel. Welcome!

The Stitcher's Niche Message Board:

Women through the generations have used their hands and their hearts to make necessities for their families and create beautiful heirlooms. On The Stitcher's Niche message board, we discuss our love of stitching (hand and machine) with other iVillagers who share that common thread. We set ourselves weekly goals; we share tips, hints, pattern and ways to save money in our crafts; and we brag about our completed projects. We hope that you, as a new poster on this board will come to share your experiences with us as well!

You will see that there are seven folders on our board. They are:

* Sew Much To Say

This is where you can post a general "Hi, how are you?"; or update us about yourself. We will also post here roll calls, board and web site news, etc. If you have a question about a needle art which is not covered in the folders below, you may ask it here and we will attempt to answer your question, or we may direct you to a board specializing in that topic.

* Sewing

This folder is where we post threads which have sewing (machine or hand) as a major topic. Here you can ask questions about techniques, patterns, etc. specific to sewing of all kinds. Tips of the week, polls and questions related to sewing, patterns, ways to save money, etc. will be posted here.

*Quilting

Like the "Sewing" folder, but specifically oriented toward quilting: piecing, quilting or tieing, binding, embellishing. Patchwork, applique or crazy-quilting. Hand-work or machine piecing and quilting --- we are interested in them all.

* Embroidery

This folder is like the "Sewing" folder, with an emphasis on cross-stitch embroidery. However, some of us are also familiar with other hand embroidery arts like needlepoint, crewel embroidery, black-work and classic embroidery, among others. If these are your are of interest, please do tell us all about them...

*Yarn Works

This folder is also like the "Sewing" folder, with an emphasis on knitting and crochet, but we also include tips and tutorials for those who needle felt, locker hook, hook or tat here! Recently, a knitting, crocheting and weaving board was been established at Hone & Food. Please check out http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-hhyarnarts/

* Goals and Accomplishments

Each week, board members post to-do lists, itemizing tasks we have set for ourselves in the week ahead (stitchery or not) and reporting on how we did on the previous weeks' to-do list! Check in at the beginning of the week, and be sure to post your progress!

This is also where we brag about our completions, and show photographs of our finished projects, our works-in-progress, etc.

*iVillage News, Views, and Reviews

iVillage and H&G promotions, Technical Services Reports, iVillage announcements and other iVillage business are posted here. In this folder, cls from other boards can promote their boards, and we post a weekly $$$-Thrifty Thursday-$$$ thread with links to free patterns, news on onine sales, tips on how to save money in our needlearts, etc.

How to Use This Web Page!

If you look at the "navigation bar" at the top of this page, you will see three words:

*Home

Home is where you are now, our welcoming and How to use the Message Boards page.

*Our "Bragging" Page

This page is where we have posted photos of the various ornament swaps we have held since 2004.

*FAQs

A number of questions have been asked on Stitcher's Niche message boards frequently enough to justify the name "Frequently Asked Question" or FAQ. This page summarizes our answers to these questions and proved links to the board threads where they were answered in more detail.

Netiquette:

We expect other drivers to observe the rules of the road and the same is true as we travel through cyberspace. Here are a few pointers to help you out:

* Avoid posting using all caps. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE SHOUTING!

* If you are attaching a photograph to your post, try to make it as small as possible without compromising photo quality. Download times for the larger attachments are awfully long for those members still using dial-up.

*Periodically review your attachment history and remove older attachments so we can continue to put in new ones. A rule of thumb might be to remove all attachments to posts made more than three months ago. Information on how to review your attachments and how to remove them is as follows:

1) Click on "attach a file" at the bottom of the "Type your message" box.

2) When you get the pop up, scroll down until you see the red link near the bottom of the pop up that says "click here to find your old attachments."

3) Do so and you will get another page that lists all your attachments to this board *and* the date posted!

3) Click on an attachment and it will bring up that post...

4) Click on edit on that post and it will have a button at the bottom that says "manage your attachments."

5)Click on this and it will take you to a page where you can select that attachment and delete it!

Sorry, you have to do this one attachment at a time, one post at a time, but if you have more than one attachment in a post, the final "deleting" pop up will list them all, which makes it a little less tedious.

* iVillage has Terms of Service (TOS) with which we all comply. Among them, we agree not to spam the boards (if you wish to promote your own business, we can direct you to boards at iVillage that have been set up for that purpose), to use care with your language (iVillage does have filters which will disallow certain words and phrases), and show respect to your fellow board members. You agreed to these TOS when you signed of with iVillage. If you wish to review these TOS again, there is a link near the top of the message board under the Home & Garden logo.

* Remember that anything you post to our message board is public. You never know who's reading it, or who may copy it and spread it around. Don't put your full name, address, email address, phone number, etc. in your messages. You may or may not wish to post pictures of yourself or your family in your messages or in your signatures.

Need Additional Help in Using These Message Boards?

Our message boards have folders. These folders are like message boards within the message board, and the messages within these folders are called threads. A folder shows the ten most recent messages. As a message is responded to, it is "bumped" to the top of a folder. If a message remains inactive, it eventually will disappear from view, but you can retrieve it by clicking on the "more" link at the bottom of each folder.

If you click on a thread title, it will open and you can read the message. If you want to reply to the message, click on the post button at the bottom of the opened message and type in the box that will appear. You can edit your message either in that box, by clicking on an edit link after you click on preview, or by clicking on an edit link in the upper right corner of your final message at any time after it has been posted to the board.

Next to the thread title is the screen name of the individual who posted the original thread, also known as the original post (OP). If you click on this screen name, you will open a window with a profile of the poster. You can also fill out your own profile from this window (or you can access your profile through a link at the top of the message board or through a link in your board settings), and you can be as complete or simple as you want. But remember, don't put in your profile information you do not want the general public to see, as these profiles can also be seen by anyone.

Here are a few links with additional help in how to use these message boards.
